Did you know that September 6th is “Read a Book Day”? While it can be such a great bonding tool (e.g. reading to your kids or reading a book at the same time as your friend) it is also just a great ‘chill out’ activity. Additionally, reading improves your concentration and memory, as well as reduces stress (something we all need right now!).

Books can be educational, helpful, or just entertaining. We asked some of the Stella team about their favourite or most recent reads. Here’s a few for you to explore:

Happy (And Other Ridiculous Aspirations) by Turia Pitt.

Happy by Turia Pitt

What is a recent read you enjoyed or your favourite book of all time?
As a Mum to a busy toddler, I don’t have much time to “read” these days, but I listened to Happy (And Other Ridiculous Aspirations) by Turia Pitt on Audible just recently. I find Turia such an inspiration. She has overcome so much and is so real about her emotions and life.

What was your favourite part of the book?
Her re-caps of each chapter are great to remind you of the key points (She calls them TL-DR: too long, didn’t read! haha)

Did you race to the end or was it more of a slow burn?
A slow burn, lots of advice to think over

Share a favourite quote from the book. Why does it stand out?
I love her simple advice of changing our words “I have to…” to saying “I get to...”  suddenly you change the way you feel about these things, and they become a privilege rather than a chore.

Who would you recommend this book to?
My sister in law, my friends, my parents, anyone that needs a reminder that we have so much to be happy about! It’s a really great read, especially with everything that is going on in the world right now.

Ghosts by Dolly Alderton.

Recommended by Emmie – Designer
Ghosts by Dolly Alderton

What was your favourite part of the book?
This book had me laughing out loud. It is quick-witted with many “zeitgeisty issues” interwoven into Nina the protagonist’s story. As a thirtysomething millennial this book was very relatable, equally as a lover of The High Low podcast (by Dolly Alderton & Pandora Sykes) I was hooked on Ghosts!

Did you race to the end or was it more of a slow burn?
Race to the end, a page turner, hard to put down!

Share a favourite quote from the book. Why does it stand out?
Hard to pick just one quote, but one of my favourite scenes from the book was a “hen-do” which captured the often over-hyped build up to such events and a dominating Maid of Honour made for lots of lols!
Who would you recommend this book to?
Anyone who loves a romcom, great beach read! (Or in these lockdown times a light and distracting read!)

Which character would you most like to meet?
Nina!

Find Me by Andrè Aciman

Recommended by Luis – Accountant
Find Me by Andre Aciman

What is a recent read you enjoyed or your favourite book of all time?
"Find Me" by André Aciman is one of my favourite books ever, this is the sequel to "Call Me By Your Name".

What was your favourite part of the book?
I can't choose a favourite part of it. The whole book is about a true love story, and specifically true love that is marred by lives lived out of sync. It’s about loving someone at exactly the wrong moment in time and finding your way through everything that follows regardless.
Did you race to the end or was it more of a slow burn?
It was a slow burn, I enjoyed so much the reading, so I took the time to focus on it and do nothing else while I continued reading.

Share a favourite quote from the book. Why does it stand out?
“Love is easy,” I said. “It’s the courage to love and to trust that matters, and not all of us have both.”

Who would you recommend this book to?
To anyone who loves passionate stories. The author of this book is a master of sensibility and intimate details. He brings us back to one of the greatest contemporary romances and make us wonder if true love ever dies.

Which character would you most like to meet?
Oliver. This character was in his mid-twenties during the early 1980's. I'vealways been fascinated by life stories like his... Homosexual guys growing in a different environment, where it was very hard to be themselves and express their love.

We hope these recommendations inspire you to pick up a book and find some time to escape soon!
